Intern* / Student* with Master Thesis (optional) Offshore Wind Turbine Modeling and Analysis

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Who we are ... Our primary focuses at Fraunhofer IWES are on wind energy and hydrogen technologies. Our institute is home to more than 300 scientists and employees as well as over 100 students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development at nine sites. We secure investments in technological developments through validation, shorten innovation cycles, accelerate certification procedures, and increase planning accuracy by means of innovative measurement methods.

This team needs your support ... You will be part of the group »Global Turbine Dynamics« at our site in Bremerhaven. At present, our team consists of six research associates. The Global Systems Dynamics group at Fraunhofer IWES conducts research in the field of aero-servo-hydro-elastic simulations of wind turbines with a focus on improving simulation and validation methods for onshore, offshore, and floating wind turbines. Simulative analysis of the system dynamics, loads, and frequencies of wind turbines is also a part of our job. Become an active member of the team; we are keen to hear your ideas! As an international oriented IWES-team, we highly appreciate an open exchange, whether this be in German or English. Respectful cooperation is also very important to us. You are wondering what you can bring to the team?

What you will do

These duties await you ... You will play a key role in developing a detailed model of a floating wind platform using the Modelica programming language. This innovative platform is designed to support a 15-megawatt offshore wind turbine, contributing to advancements in renewable energy technology. Your work will involve creating a comprehensive simulation model that accurately represents the platform’s physical properties and dynamic behavior, including key components such as the turbine and mooring systems. You will also conduct a natural frequency analysis to ensure the platform’s stability and safe operation under varying environmental conditions, such as wind and wave interactions. In addition, you will evaluate the hydrodynamic properties of the platform, examining its behavior in different sea states, currents, and wind speeds. To further assess performance, you will analyze both static and dynamic loads acting on the platform during various operational scenarios. Throughout your internship, you will be expected to document your findings and methodologies. You will prepare reports and presentations to communicate your results effectively to the project team and stakeholders. But to not worry, the team will be there to support you.

What you bring to the table

What is your background? Are you studying Mechanical, Civil or Wind Engineering and would like to tackle with Marine Structures? Do you have experience using Python? You understand and speak English? Great, we are looking forward to your application!

What you can expect

What we can offer you ... We offer various opportunities to join us as a student. Whether it is an internship, where you gain a comprehensive insight into the areas of work, or the role of a student assistant, which is easy to combine with your studies. Are you looking for an exciting topic for your thesis and do you want to delve deeply into a topic scientifically? Together, we will find the right path for you! We know that studying can also be very demanding and requires a certain level of flexibility. That is no problem here, as – in agreement with your colleagues – you can decide flexibly what days and hours to work. Temporarily, you can even work remotely, depending on the job.

The internship is limited to 3 months, individual agreements are possible. There is an option of extension as a student assistant with the possibility of completing a thesis. During an internship, the working time consists of 39 hours per week. In case of a student assistantship, the working time consists of up to 60 hours per month. In the case of an internship, remuneration is based on the federal government guidelines for intern salaries. In the case of a student assistantship, remuneration is based on the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
